Dear Faculty, Staff and
Parents:
At the board meeting of
June 1st, the Board of Trustees will be asked to approve a
new position titled Director of Educational Services and Technology.
Carolyn Seaton, the principal of Manhattan Beach Middle School, is
being recommended to fill this position. The application deadline for
the middle school principal position will be June 20th,
with an appointment as soon as possible.
During the past year, the
Superintendent and Director of Human Resources have assumed oversight
responsibilities for all aspects of Educational Services and Pupil
Personnel Services. Site principals have also filled additional duties
in a wide range of areas. The Assistant Superintendent of Business has
assumed the responsibility for Technology, Food Services, and a range
of other additional duties beyond his fiscal and facilities-based job
description. Finally, in January 2005, our Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco
Education Coordinator accepted a position outside the district and her
position was not filled.
After reviewing the
extensive needs within the Educational Services and Technology
departments and growing requirements associated with No Child Left
Behind compliance, it was determined that a position of Director of
Educational Services and Technology was necessary in order to address
the myriad of duties within technology, curriculum and categorical
programs. This position will focus on technology, staff development,
curriculum coordination, GATE and categorical program compliance. In
addition, she will be responsible for our drug abuse prevention and
education programs.
Due to the scope of this
job, which is a combination of several eliminated positions, we are
able to fully fund this position from state and federal block grant
funds (Professional Development, Instructional Improvement, School and
Library Improvement and Carl Washington School Safety Grant). There
will be no impact on the district’s general fund budget.
Carolyn Seaton joined our
district in 1997 as a teacher of English, language arts, math, and
science prior to her promotion to assistant principal and then
principal of Manhattan Beach Middle School. Her extensive background
in curriculum, technology and categorical programs makes her an ideal
choice for this position. Mrs. Seaton has been a teacher of the gifted
and has served as a co-director of our program during this academic
year. Additionally, she has completed an intensive "Curriculum
and Instruction Academy" led by statewide curriculum leaders from
the Association of California School Administrators.
Carolyn Seaton is a Magna
Cum Laude graduate of Southern Methodist University where she was
honored as a member of the academic honor society, Phi Beta Kappa. She
received her Master’s degree at the University of North Texas,
graduating with a perfect 4.0 academic record.
In addition to her
professional qualifications, Carolyn is highly collaborative and
approachable. She possesses exceptional written and oral communication
skills and her personal warmth, dedication, commitment, energy and
enthusiasm are key attributes for this role.
We are confident that the
outstanding reputation of the middle school staff will attract top
quality applicants and, ultimately, an exceptional leader for our
school. We will keep you apprised of our progress throughout the next
month.
