Authors'
Week 2005 with author/illustrator Robin Rector Krupp was a
celebration of reading, writing, illustrating and the creative
process that goes with all of those!

During
the week, students attended assemblies where they met the author and
learned how the book "The Rainbow and You" was created.

Robin
showed everyone that there are many steps involved in creating a
book.

She
described how one of the greatest moments in the process is when
viewing the pages for the very first time.

Students
were eager to participate and enjoyed interacting with the author.
They learned that rewriting is an integral part of the process.

During
the week, each classroom also had the opportunity to visit with the
author one-on-one in the Pennekamp Library.

First,
she worked on a writing exercise and encouraged students to ask questions.

A
lesson on creating sketches and developing illustrations was next.

Students
were then asked to draw their hands.

Robin
gave the students a few pointers and then asked them to do another
drawing of their hands. Ask your student to show you their
"before" and "after" hand sketches!

Throughout
the week, mystery readers visited classrooms and shared their
favorite books with students.

Parents,
teachers and students alike shared in a celebration of books and
reading.

Visitors
ranged from animals and pirates to the donut man and the number
lady!

Fifth
grade students also participate in a screen writer's workshop lead
by former PK parent and professional screenwriter Karol Hoeffner
Shrodes.
A big
thank you to the Pennekamp PTA for sponsoring Authors' Week. We
are one of the few schools in the nation that has an author visit
for an entire week (see the article "A
Joyful Noise: Authors in Our Schools" from "Our
Children", the magazine of the National PTA) and that effort
takes financial and volunteer support from the entire
Pennekamp family. We sincerely thank all of you for your
generosity.
